I've been learning to play guitar for about two years now, and I generally prefer to play classical over steel string or electric (I have all three). The problem is that my classical guitar was one I bought second hand on ebay for $20. It was actually a pretty good deal at that price, and good for learning on in the earlier stages, but I've reached a point where I really wanted something better. Hence, today I ventured out to Just Music buy a new classical guitar.
I ended up buying a La Patrie Etude. They're a Canadian brand, and the guitar itself is a cedar top with a lovely deep, smooth sound. I read a lot of reviews of it online where people kept saying "Holy shit, what's going on? This $600-700 guitar sounds like a $2000 guitar", and I've got to say, after wandering around the shop strumming a whole stack of guitars in the <$1000 range, this one really did sound the nicest to me by far. And I managed to get it for $500, which was sweet. I'm already feeling incredibly satisfied by my purchase - when I play this guitar (with all my faults and limited ability), I feel like a way better guitarist than with my old one, simply because it sounds so much nicer.
Now, you might be wondering what's up with the subject title of this post. Well, in a moment of weakness I also bought something I've desperately wanted for many, many years...
I am, of course, talking about a banjo. I just couldn't help myself, but after hearing that wonderful twang, and experiencing the joy of playing one for the first time, I knew I'd made the right decision :)
