Simpsons Movie
Aug. 2nd, 2007 02:41 pmNot really any spoilers, but if you want to be safe, just skip it.
Saw it last night with
originalnilson and
hipikat. I thought it was okay. A few moments of brilliance, a few moments of lameness, and the rest was all ... just ... "decent".
Like many, I think The Simpsons has been going downhill for a few years now. It started in the late 90s, but got really dire in the last 5 years. I think the big problem is that they're shifting constantly further away from their trademark style of humour. The Simpsons always felt kind of "light". The humour was gentle, well-meaning and kind of ... pure? These days they seem to be taking on the style of stuff like Family Guy - non-sequiters and shock humour. I really like Family Guy, and think their style works for that show. It doesn't work for The Simpsons.
Anyway, I was expecting a 90 minute long episode along the lines of the newer series, only with a more "epic" feel. That's pretty much what I got, although perhaps marginally better. It would've been great if they'd allowed the enormous supporting cast some more screen time, in roles that were a little more substancial. We get loads of Flanders and everyone else has 3 second cameos. Even with a cast that big, they're all already so well fleshed out that they could have significant roles without detracting from the main plot.
Anyhoo, let's say 7/10. I'll leave it at that.
