EDIT: It looks like the suggestion was just the property manager "giving us an idea of what the market value of the unit is". She hasn't got final word on the rent back from the owner yet, so it might not be so bad. They've increased our rent a couple of times already, but it's been in small increments - hopefully this will continue.
*sigh* When a tenant cautiously asks "Any idea how much the rent will increase", you'd expect an answer of "Well, the market value is $80pw higher than what you pay" is going to sound quite alarmingly suggestive.
