...was fantastic. A really great show, probably second only to The Flaming Lips set at last year's BDO in terms of my own personal enjoyment.

The only minor downsides were that there were a few of my favourites songs that went unplayed (not that big a deal) and, far more annoyingly, there were three really drunk, annoying, noisy people to my immediate right, who wouldn't shut up until they finally vanished halfway through the show. It's a bit more bearable during the loud songs, but when a song consists of nothing more than very subdued guitar and Conor Oberst barely whispering into the mic, then talking, phoning your friends and singing along out of tune are all really fucking annoying things to do!

Anyway, that gripe aside, everything else was wonderful. Personal highlights included "Lua," "Poison Oak," "Bowl Of Oranges," "Train Underwater," "When the President Talks to God" and "True Blue." The opening to "Poison Oak" was especially nice, as Conor and the girl playing bass just stood together, leaning on one another in a lovely little shared moment, and drew the 10 second guitar intro out to a full couple of minutes. It was kind of spacey and meditative and just ... really nice :)

They only played two tracks from Lifted, which is odd, since it's the one everyone loves the most. It was really cool to hear a lot of stuff from the other albums though, since I've only managed to buy Lifted and I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning so far.

Conor got gradually more and more drunk as the show progressed, which was pretty funny. He was pretty stage shy at first, but the more white wine he got into him, the more onstage banter he indulged in. There was even an introduce-the-band-and-say-how-much-I-love-them-all bit, which was quite sweet. At one point he also commented that he realises they're not exactly a "party band" and that quite a bit of their music is on the gloomy side, but assured us he wanted us to enjoy ourselves and be happy. No need to feel melancholy, just to fit with the music! Twas very cute.

The closer, "Road To Joy" was wonderful. The music gradually got more and more ridiculously chaotic, and by the closing of the song Conor was smashing a drum with his guitar and the keyboardist/trumpet player was surfing the keyboard while playing his trumpet! I was amazed he didn't break his neck...

Anyway, that's a pretty thorough summing-up methinks.

So, which cool artist is coming to Perth next? Ooh, Henry Rollins! Hmmmmm :)
