Hellboy II
Tina and I saw Hellboy II: The Golden Army last night. We were lucky enough to get into the Gold Class session using our Magnum upgrade thingies (buy an icecream, get a free upgrade from a regular ticket, but you're not allowed to use them when booking in advance so it's a bit of a gamble). Gold Class is generally a massive ripoff, but if you get it for the price of a regular ticket, then there's certainly nothing to complain about.
I really liked the movie. I actually liked the first Hellboy movie quite a lot, too. It seemed to receive a bit of a mixed response, but I thought it was really entertaining and charming in a clunky kind of way. Anyway, the sequel presented a similar film in terms of plotline, dialogue, characterisation, etc, but with the massive budget required to fully realise the visual design and action sequences they clearly had in mind for the first installment.
And that's the thing that really stands out about Hellboy II - it's absolutely breathtaking to look at. I've become convinced that Guillermo del Toro and his go-to special effects guys should make a Shadow of the Colossus movie. It was the very first thought that occurred to me upon seeing the giant rock-formation dude rising up out of the ground. God, that could be such an awesome film.
The other thing Hellboy II really delivers on is action sequences. You know how most action films have a few smaller, warm-up sequences, before they finally deliver the really spectacular one at the end? Well, Hellboy II's warm-up sequences were more visually impressive, epic and exciting than most other big-budget action films' finales.
So, there you go. Good stuff.
